Venezuela Spending on Arms Soars to World’s Top Ranks

New York Times

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s arms spending has climbed to more than $4 billion in the past two years, transforming the nation into Latin America’s largest weapons buyer and placing it ahead of other major purchasers in international arms markets like Pakistan and Iran.

Venezuelan military and government officials here say the arms acquisitions, which include dozens of fighter jets and attack helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles, are needed to circumvent a ban by the United States on sales of American weapons to the country.

They also argue that Venezuela must strengthen its defenses to counter potential military aggression from the United States.

U.S. Developing Contingency Plan to Bomb Iran: Report

Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Despite the Bush administration's insistence it has no plans to go to war with Iran, a Pentagon panel has been created to plan a bombing attack that could be implemented within 24 hours of getting the go-ahead from President George W. Bush, The New Yorker magazine reported in its latest issue.

The special planning group was established within the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in recent months, according to an unidentified former U.S. intelligence official cited in the article by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh in the March 4 issue.

The panel initially focused on destroying Iran's nuclear facilities and on regime change but has more recently been directed to identify targets in Iran that may be involved in supplying or aiding militants in Iraq, according to an Air Force adviser and a Pentagon consultant, who were not identified.

Toronto Summit 2007 - Working Paper: Culture

Toronto Star

TORONTO -- The Toronto City Summit Alliance is hosting meetings on Monday and Tuesday to find ways to address the challenges facing the city. The Star is looking at the issues. Today we offer a snapshot of reports on culture.

THE PROBLEM

Looking at the construction going on in Toronto's culture-related institutions, it's obvious a cultural renaissance is underway but, beyond structures, many of the people involved in the creative industries are being neglected. While there is much buzz about the new or enhanced structures for the ROM, The AGO, the Gardiner Museum, and the Canadian Opera Company, among others, what about smaller organizations that also need assistance?

GOOGLE Canada to VERY soon announce campus site in Waterloo - February 24, 2007

Rumours spreading around the University of Waterloo campus and in particular, the RIM Campus this week have GOOGLE officially locating their NEW Canadian GOOGLE Campus on “UniWAT” lands or in close proximity to the RIM Waterloo campus.

As with any new, major corporate deal of this size, no confirmation (or denial) from City of Waterloo officials is apparently available or forth coming. The same tight lipped, no information is available are also affecting the local paper, The RECORD, the Region of Waterloo and anybody else who has an official capacity. They all seem to be unusually politically quiet. Wait for the announcement and the political “heroes” to emerge.

Alex Hutchinson for The Ottawa Citizen wrote on February 08, 2007 , the following ... " Google's Search for a Canadian Foothold Found Waterloo, Not Ottawa. "

Time will tell if this is indeed a truly almost complete deal for Waterloo. The rumours are this deal will happen very soon. Size and future of a Canadian GOOGLE Campus (CGC) in the City of Waterloo are still unknowns.

February 18, 2007 marks the arrival around the world of the Chinese New Year. For 15 days, the Chinese people will celebrate the pending arrival of spring with the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The date of the Chinese New Year is derived from The Chinese calendar invented in the year 2637 B.C.E. by then Emperor Huangdi. On the Chinese calendar the year 2007 is officially the Lunar Year 4704 – 4705.

“The Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the First Moon of the lunar calendar. The corresponding date in the solar calendar varies from as early as January 21st to as late as February 19th. Chinese New Year, as the Western new Year, signified turning over a new leaf.”

The importance of family and friends and the beginning of new opportunities are celebrated throughout the world.

There are twelve animals associated with the new year cycle. It is legendary that Buddha asked all animals to meet him but only twelve came. The history of the new year is that persons born in the year of a specific animal would have some of the traits of the animal. Like people celebrating other new years, resolutions for the coming year are made. The current Chinese New Year is the year of the “Pig” or the “Boar”. It is often said that people born in the Year of the Pig would have such traits as “excellent manners, make and keep friends, work very hard, and appreciate luxury”.

There are many celebrations which take place over a two week period, the Chinese New Year ends with the lantern festival on March 04, 2007, which is the fifteenth day of the new year.

Gung Hay Fat Choy translates to “Best Wishes and Congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year.”

Sending Your Child to a Major American University Costs $244,953 (Cdn$)

For the first time ever the total cost of attending one year of university has exceeded $50,000 (US$) or the exchange equivalent of $61,238 (Cdn$).

While there have been several Ivy League schools exceeding the $50K barrier before this increase, George Washington University , in downtown Washington, DC, has become the first major university to charge costs which not only are obscene, they far exceed inflation costs and any other cost except the rising cost of a share of stock in Google or RIM.

Bloomberg News reported on February 9, 2007, the change in tuition fees approved by the Trustees of the university.

This increase in cost to obtain a four year bachelors degree takes place in the shadows of the Capitol Building and the White House.

As disgusting as this obscene tuition fee seems, it will be implemented only a few kilometres from southeast Washington, DC, one of the most impoverished areas in the United States.

Obama Sees New Generation of Leadership

Reuters

AMES, Iowa (Reuters) - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama drew a contrast with rival Hillary Rodham Clinton over the Iraq war on Sunday and said he was "not clear" how she planned to end the conflict.

Gates Calls for Partnership with Russia in Security Matters

CNN

MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, in his first speech as Pentagon chief, made an urgent call Sunday for NATO allies to live up to their promises to supply military and economic aid for Afghanistan, saying that failing to do so would be shameful.

And in a carefully worded rebuke, he used both humor and some pointed jabs to blunt Russia's sharp attack against U.S. foreign policy a day earlier.

PM's Home Truths ... What John Howard Thinks Really Matters To You

Sydney Morning Herald

DROUGHT-PROOFING Australia and solving the water crisis are bigger election issues than climate change, Prime Minister John Howard says.

Mr Howard set the scene for the election year by nominating the home-based issues of economic prosperity, national security and "self-contained" Australian environmental issues as the keys to a fifth successive victory.

Dion's Aggressive Tone Raising Eyebrows

Toronto Star

OTTAWA–Neither man would probably want to see it this way, but as this 2007 political season is shaping up, it seems that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion are trying to borrow style points from each other.

They're both in the business of defining – or in Harper's case, redefining – themselves in the public eye.

Ever since the Liberals chose an environmentally friendly new leader in December, it seems that Harper and his government have been trying to rub off some of their own hard edges. It's still a work in progress. The words "environment" and "friendly" aren't exactly the ones that spring to mind when describing the 1-year-old Harper regime.

There's "A Fungus AmongUs"... and yes it is DEADLY!

In the Globe and Mail, more evidence of global warming is coming forward. This evidence link is not good news!

Apparently since 2001, a rare and deadly fungus has been killing people and animals alike on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island.

Carolyn Abraham, in her article in the G&M (February 10, 2007), describes the mainly equatorial, single cell fungus as Cryptococcus gattii, a microscopic pathogen normally found in tropical or sub-tropical locales in Australia, Africa, India or South America — was first identified on Vancouver Island in 2001. Many suspect that global warming has recently enabled the one-celled organism to thrive in the trees, soil, water and air along the island's east coast. ”

Humans, household pets and porpoises seem to be the most infected so far and they have all had deaths from the growth of this fungus. The equatorial fungus seems to cause a pneumonia like disease in the lungs and it also has been shown to attack the central nervous system through meningitis.

According to Abraham. “ as of December, 2006, 165 people had been infected and eight have died.

This statistically represents a 4.85% chance of death if you contract this nasty and deadly fungal growth which mainly invades the lungs.

As a result, foreign medical and tropical disease experts have issued world medical and health alerts for persons who become ill after visiting the rain forest areas of western Canada.

Even socialized medicine can’t control the outcome of newly evolving diseases as the world’s climate changes.

Pass me a respirator, I’m headed to Victoria in the next few weeks.

Your Name, on the Web

Q. How do I make my own Web page and use my own name for the Web address?

A. If you don’t want to use the free site-hosting, page-building tools and templates available on sites like Google Page Creator (pages.google.com) or Yahoo’s GeoCities (geocities.yahoo.com) because you can’t have your exact name for the address, you will need to do a little more work.

The basic process involves buying the domain name for your site, finding a company to host it (so people can get to it on the Internet) and then building the site. Many Web site design and hosting firms have package deals that do most or all of it for you.

There are many companies that sell and register Web site domain names, including GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com), Dotster (www.dotster.com) , Register.com (www.register.com). On these types of sites, you can see if your name is available and register it there for a small fee. These types of sites can also usually guide you through the hosting and site-building part of the process.

Designing and building the site on your own may take some time if you are unfamiliar with the coding used on Web pages and other standard tasks like uploading them to a Web server.

Sites like www.2createawebsite.com and www.webmonkey.com have free tutorials on the process, and most bookstores have many volumes on the subject of Web site creation.
